Cottagecore is created by/ for white people that have this “living off the grid” mindset. They’re still colonizers, even if they put on an innocent face. You can desire escape from your troubles without romanticizing a whole concept built on inhabiting 'empty land'(1/??)
COTTAGECORE IS CAPITALIST. it was used to advertise the romanticization of purchasing private land. today it is used to advertise ~escaping capitalism on empty land~ by purchasing private property. We live on colonized soil(2/??)
The idea of “living off the grid” is purely colonialist. These hipsters starting farms to indulge in their lily white fantasies on “unmarked land” it’s still on stolen land and also Self sufficiency is often entirely eurocentric/WHITE VIEW of agriculture on INDIGENOUS LAND.(3/??)
So I wanna be clear this is different from communal land stewardship: one that recognizes indigenous land rights, that recongizes/ seeks to abolish how in America; colonialism/anti blackness function in tandem, that often leave other people homeless while a rich man bathes(4/4)
My honest thoughts abt cottagecore are not that you shouldn’t dream of living an intimate, environmentally friendly life, taking care of the land, but we have problems, its the idea of homesteading. A lot of colonialism was fueled by the inherent want to find new land.(5/??)
Often to tame it, so you can live a domestic life on it, and indigenous groups of all countries have felt unsafe of that idea for centuries due to the effects it has had on them. in the terror that consumerism and capitalism impose, a constant overstimulation.(6/??)
That people dream of escaping from. On the other hand life has gotten really lonely due to an induvidualistic culture, so we dream of having friends and family in a safe environment where there is calm and care for each other.(7/??)
In order to actually live the cottagecore fantasy, we need to overcome the idea of property ownership as the only way to be safe and free, because that’s a capitalistic ideology. We don’t need to OWN grounds and real estate, even when they are just cottages.(8/??)
We need to respect the lands we live on and form communities that act respectfully and with responsibility. That’s really it, but that shouldn’t be up to white colonizer/settlers, it’d be up to the indigenous nation in that area if were going by us centric standards.(9/9)
Cause I mean think of it really who knows the land better and has a good grasp on the biodiversity and livability the land has then people who’ve lived on it for x number of centuries to and from. (10/10)
