A few days ago, I received a message from a colleague who is “concerned about my career prospects” because of how vocal I am on social media – this platform specifically.
I thought about doing nothing, but instead, I want to spend a moment talking about it. 1/x

At my core, I wholeheartedly and fundamentally believe in a few things, and don’t want any confusion: #BlackLivesMatter
https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt="">, immigrants (like myself) are essential to our communities and workforce, women deserve equal pay for equal work, 2/x
every company should meet standards of support for LGBTQIA+ employees, our minimum wage needs to be at least $15 per hour, and #CareerDev professional associations should be held accountable by members to push the field forward. 3/x
Yes, I ask challenging questions. At the same time, women of color are, all too often, policed in our approaches to share content – particularly on social media. By someone saying that my voice is a liability in my field, they are saying that my questions are unacceptable. 4/x
Friends, it should not be unacceptable to want better, more equity-centered approaches in the field of career development. 5/x
As a Latina, being “professional” is important to me (but also loaded in White supremacy). As an immigrant and a first-generation student, I earned my place in higher education – and my story is part of what got me to this point. 6/x
To question my ability to remain “professional” or be a positive addition to any workplace because of my voice is: demeaning, threatening, and avoids the topic at hand = that we, as a field, can and must do better for the students and clients we serve each day. 7/x
So grateful for the support & validation that has come from this moment.

Oh! And to clarify: I am very happy in my current role and have no plans to leave. And, deeply grateful for a supervisor who uplifts and supports me. I wish this for everyone - especially women of color.
