THREAD: Josh Jacobs and Jon Gruden's Diverse Zone Run Game

Latest video breakdown is out! #Raiders
2/ In my latest video on Josh Jacobs, I took a deep dive into Jacobs' 2019 season with the #Raiders. How Gruden calls zone running plays and how he creates yards by breaking tackles. Dude it incredible at setting up his blocks. Patience is phenomenal.

📽️
3/ One thing Gruden did a ton of 2019 was use "nasty" splits by the WRs to have them help block in the outside zone run game. Helped create angles and match-up advantages. #Raiders

📽️
4/ What kept coming up was the VARIETY of play calling that Gruden offers. Sure, they are mostly zone running plays, but I counted 11 different variations of outside zone and 16 (!) of inside zone. Many different ways to attack the defense. #Raiders

📽️
5/ Also, Gruden's use of motions - both pre-snap and behind the LOS during the play - were great at disguising the run. #Raiders

+0.5 ypc on pre-snap motions
+2.2 ypc using behind the LOS during runs

📽️
6/ Here are a couple more examples of the #Raiders using motions to set up running lanes. Love how Jacobs finishes them.

📽️
7/ I also looked at Jacobs as a receiver. He was used primarily on screens and check downs as a rookie. Think he'll get a lot more usage next season. #Raiders

📽️
8/ One way the #Raiders can use Josh Jacobs is like the Panthers use Christian McCaffrey. Texas/Angle routes out of the backfield like on this Zampese concept. Get him open in space.

📽️
9/ Another way the #Raiders can get him open is on Choice routes out of the backfield. This will allow him to go 1v1 with a linebacker. Can definitely run this play like McCaffrey does.

📽️
10/ To end this thread, I think Jacobs is a premiere running back in the NFL. He'll become even better the more he's used. The #Raiders got a REALLY good player.
