Conversations about the future of work have accelerated decades so far in 2020.
Here are my predictions of what's ahead (a thread)

Here are my predictions of what's ahead (a thread)

With no London office to commute to, why not spend three months as a digital nomad in Malaysia?
The uncoupling of work and place will lead people to live more global lives.

Companies will still have real estate, but it'll serve different purposes going forward.
Buildings will become collaboration hubs with versatile meeting spaces rather than rows of desks.

Big tech already takes a borderless approach to hiring. Remote is mainstream now, so others will follow.
That goes for big, global companies and small, independent outfits alike.

Bosses can't sell remote work as a perk anymore. Workers have a world of opportunities to choose from.
That means companies will have to fight harder to attract and retain the talent they need.

The idea of work/life balance was always a false start. The useful debate is about ways of integrating the many aspects of a life.
The future of work is really the future of living.

It'll be harder for traditional organisations to compete with distributed companies.
Old players will have to transform or they'll fail. Startups will be remote-first by default.

Companies need to reassess how they build culture and community among remote-first teams.
The answer? Whole company retreats every 3-12 months. Distributed orgs already do it.

Countries are announcing new visas for remote workers all over the place as part of Covid recovery.
These travellers will stay longer, spend more and contribute to business ecosystems.

Old cultural, creative and economic centres like London, Paris and New York are on their way out.
Unexpected disruptors like Kigali, George Town and Hobart will rise as more popular and attractive options.

All this could give more people:
• access to global opportunities
• autonomy over work and life
• the ability to shape the tech they interact with daily
But those outcomes aren't guaranteed. The future is what we make it. So let's make it.
