@BrianNorgard on Tinder:
1. Always give users’ superpower in the product. They should always feel like levelling up in the game - like an achievement model
2. Everyone has made dating very transactional. We wanted it to be Fun
(contd..)
3. Do it in a way that people should love the monetisation. People don’t like and talk about NYT subscription
4. Product as a Game/Toy:
1. Everything great starts out a toy - Chris Dixon
2. What is a toy: People love it, play around with it, they show it to people
3. User should go: I want to play with it, I want to share it
4. They may say its not for me, but not able to keep app down
5. Insight from Tinder:
1. Simplicity reign supreme. Consumer doesn’t have time. They need something very natural which is wedged in the fabric of their life. Your job is never done. They should be in the state of “No Mind”
(contd..)
2. We focus so much on our differences but I saw much more connectedness like people love entertainment, having fun.
6. Good Product Manager:
1. They truly understand one core objective they are going after.
2. Being a PM is about owning the entire value chain
3. Best PMs & Companies are reductionist. They kill more than they conceive.
7. A framework of a good decision:
1. Tinder Product Creed/Constitution: Simple, Fun, Useful
2. CPO is the custodian of the Creed/Constitution
8. Resources:
1. Book: Addiction by Design (by @BrianNorgard )
2. Book: Don’t shoot the Dog (by @kunalb11)
(contd..)
3. Watch people cook on YouTube very complicated dishes. Everyone has the same ingredients but you can see the courageous decisions taken by them to build inspiring dishes. Favourite Show: Chef’s Table on @netflix
4. Search for Tony Fadell’s and Jony Ive’s content. They are disciples of Steve Jobs and you can feel the culture going down. They are even better in terms of feeling about what customers want.
5. Work with someone who truly knows & believes in how to build for the customer.
9. Post-Covid World: Some incredible macro trends are at play. The world has changed. SV as an idea is more important than SV as a place. Incredible time for India. So much of building a successful company is a function of time.
