My attention has been drawn to a piece on the Offal Monthly website that makes a number of critical comments on my role as chairman of the Tripe Marketing Board.
1/
I have not seen it myself but I thought it was important to set the record straight before rumours and innuendo start circulating in social media.
2/
I take my role extremely seriously. Part of it requires me to represent tripe not merely in Lancashire and parts of Yorkshire and the West Midlands buy also in more exotic locations.
3/
No past chairman of the TMB or it's predecessor organisations has worked harder. Over the last 5 years alone I have been obliged to make frequent visits to Spain, the Canary Islands, Madeira, Portugal, Italy and Greece.
4/
Offal Monthly - which it is fair to say has long harboured jealousies about the success of tripe - has suggested that these trips are only made to sunnier areas. This conveniently ignores the visits I have made to Romania, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and elsewhere.
5/
Furthermore, it has been stated that I am 'frittering away' funds that would be better spent on promoting tripe.
This is nonsense. In 2010, the widow of a former prominent tripe dresser made the TMB a small endowment which was to be expressly used to collect facts about tripe.
6/
It is this, as well as the generous hospitality of offal and meat-processing organisations abroad, that supports this vital work.
7/
It is sometimes challenging work and not for the faint-hearted. I was wearing masks (during visits to abattoirs) long before they became fashionable.
8/
I have personally visited over 1300 restaurants in my search for those which serve tripe on their menu, and have provided critical reviews to the board of the TMB on both of those I found.
9/
I like to think that, due to my diligence, we now know more about tripe across the globe than any other meat-based marketing board.
10/
I hope I have also been able to pique the curiosity of people by generously distributing promotional materials during my travels. Only yesterday, I surprised a waiter at a restaurant with a TMB pen.
11/
I trust that Offal Monthly will now withdraw their outrageous suggestions, without forcing me to refer the matter to @YGB_Solicitors.
