A little Thread.
I come from a disadvantaged background. I had free schools meals until I was 15; My mother often went hungry to feed me. I lived on the local council estate. /1
I was consistently predicted “average” grades from the moment I sat my Year 2 SATS until I finished college at 18. /2
Yet I also consistently defied expectations and achieved above average results in most subjects until I went to university - an opportunity no one in my family had had. /3
I went to the local comprehensive which though ‘improving’ when I sat my GCSEs didn’t have a great track record for students achieving 5+ A*-C grades. /4
Yet I got into a good college and subsequently an even better university. Twice. /5
If I were a young person now, ministers in our government would say I am not worthy of the two degrees and nursing PIN I now possess because “it’s above me” /6
But I just want to remind EVERY young person out there, no matter what your background that YOU. ARE. WORTHY.
I don’t write this thread to “big” myself up but to show that your postcode shouldn’t mean the difference between living your dreams and not. /7
I am appalled by the government response. Pandemic or no pandemic it’s not acceptable. It cuts deep with me because yesterday could have/would have been me. @BorisJohnson It is not ok to put peoples worth in their postcode or school grade history. /8
