My brother did 3 tours of Northern Ireland, my Uncle& #39;s
wife& #39;s family were connected to the IRA.
At primary school I took in mugshots of IRA terrorists
which my brother gave to me.
Photos, names, addresses,
I had live rounds and rubber bullets.
I hated the IRA.

I was an 8 yr old kid fearing for my brother.
When I was 5 at a hospital I saw people brought in from
an IRA bomb attack.
In 1979 while I was in Munster, West Germany 2 IRA
terrorists attacked soldiers as they stopped at a crossing.
I got to see the car, bullets, blood.

I had so much hate for these people who would want to attack my people and even travel to West Germany so every day I was taught to check under cars and stay away from windows while living with my sister and brother in law who were both British Army.
As I got older I got to be more informed about the history of Ireland and to get what it was all about.
I was in the army cadets from a child but then changed to ATC because my Dad served in the RAF stationed in Egypt.

My brother and brother in law were stationed next to East Germany on constant military exercises used to agitate the East German guards.
At 16 I chose the British Army over the RAF.
My mind was made up, for Queen and country and to
make something of myself.
I had a job but nothing to me could replace the sense
of belonging that the forces gives people.

I chose a holiday in Rhodes as my last days as a civilian
and travelled with siblings. I met squaddies out there with their families. I got to hear their perspectives and met an English woman whose brother had committed suicide while in the Army due to bullying.

My sister ran a pub in Portsmouth Barracks, West Germany
and would watch men beating each other to a pulp out of boredom and anger.
soldiers being sexually harassed, soldiers wives being put in situations by commanding officers.

I worked on site with a young Irish boy who basically
made me evaluate my perception of Irish people.
His family and friends were such wonderful people
and this conflicted with everything the television and newspapers was telling me.

I did some work on Murphy& #39;s sites and found some friendly chilled Irish people while I was working with some really
anxiety ridden English men who would moan all day and slag me off for being a "clueless 16 year old" without kids or a mortgage.

My brother now visits Ireland every year, he is embarrassed
to have served in Northern Ireland. he lost some friends there who he feels should never have gone there.
He also witnessed SAS agitating both sides during the troubles.

They say ignorance is bliss.
But ignorance allows exploitation and manipulation.
Everything I was told to believe in has been exposed
as lies, all for the corruption of the British Government.
We need to devolve the Union and isolate the cancer
of the British Empire.
