A few times a year there's a surge of people asking for advice on how to make comics and how to break into the business.

I have over 40 free articles on my site that cover a lot of ground, starting with-

How Do I Break In?

When I was getting started there weren't a lot of resources on this stuff, so when I figured parts out or received advice I compiled as much of it as I could in these articles to save time and encourage other people to make their own original comics.

I wrote that original breaking in article on my Livejournal back in 2007 and, even as the industry evolves, the core advice in there still holds true for comics, gaming, and just about any other industry.

My comic career started in 2001 with a free webcomic I wrote + drew in my spare time.

My first paid comic work was coloring in 2003 and writing in 2006.

My creator-owned 'break out' was 2010.

DC Comics writing in 2012.
Marvel Comics writing in 2014.
Monthly Marvel work 2016.
If I was starting my comic career NOW, I'd use social media and crowdfunding to learn, meet collaborators, and fund my (reasonable and achievable) initial projects, building up my skills while making friends along the way.

I'd get involved in anthologies and find a community of like-minded creators at a similar point in their development to help advise and support my efforts as I support theirs.

As your skills grow, your network will too.
Unexpected opportunities follow.

There are more resources and options than ever before.

More ways to find an audience and control what you make.

And more competition too.

But nothing happens if you don't start things, finish them, learn from them, and keep going.
