time to tweet again about Results Day Chaos. i have a lot to say so please bear with me. i'm going to talk about my experience and the experience of my friends, and the pain this has caused people dear to me #alevels2020 1/9
firstly, for some context. i go to a high performing state school in an affluent area. personally, i believe that my grades are a true reflection of what i would have achieved if i had taken my exams. i have met my offer and i am very relieved. however, 2/9
as hard as i worked, and as much as i deserved those grades, i know that they are also a product of privilege. had i gone to a different school, it is likely that i would not be in this position now. i can only imagine the pain of missing an oxbridge offer because of this 3/9
fiasco. what i saw yesterday at school, among my friends, was true heartbreak. people have dramatically missed their offers, to the extent that they have to take a year out to resit. no one knows how long the appeals process will take, and even those whose unis have held 4/9
their places open for them until an appeal is complete, have a very short time limit on this. given that details of the appeals process are not being released until next week, it seems impossible to meet the grades by the end of the month. i have friends who have worked 5/9
their entire lives to get in to medical school, who now have no where to go. friends have lost hard won places at institutions like UCL through no fault of their own and ridiculous downgrading. our headteacher was comforting sobbing students in the car park yesterday morning 6/9
my friends are running out of options, and watching them hold back tears as they tried to talk about their next steps, their futures radically altered by an algorithm, was devastating. i am devastated for them. if this is what is happening at an affluent, 7/9
high performing school, then i dread to think what is happening to less well-off students. i am saying all this because it is imperative that people understand the destruction being caused to peoples' lives. their lives. it is simply unjustifiable and i am utterly disgusted 8/9
i really urge you to listen to the young people in your lives, sign the petition i just retweeted, register to vote, do not forget about this. i will not be forgetting. you deserve better: never forget that, and never, ever forget this 9/9
