New in @BJAJournals: New data on long term, pt-reported #disability and #frailty after #surgery. Big take home is that ppl with frailty have a much larger DECREASE in disability 1 yr postop https://bit.ly/2CquCYK . Seem surprising? 1/n
2/ important to remember that surgical diagnoses can really contribute to the presence of #frailty and #disability preop. Successful surgery may lead to meaningful decreases in both. So #frailty on its own shouldn’t be a barrier to surgery. @Krockdoc @camilla_wong @SAGAnesthesia
3/ people with frailty also more disabled at baseline, so more room to improve. Regression to the mean may contribute, but regardless older ppl with frailty can and do benefit from surgery @CFN_NCE @CASUpdate @CanGeriSoc @CarpAdvocacy
4/ that said, >1/3 ppl with frailty have a tough go in early recovery. In group based trajectory modelling there’s clearly a subset that have a lot more disability before improvement (blue group)
