a thread on why you should watch the legend of korra ↓
many fans of avatar the last airbender may be interested in its 2012 sequel series: the legend of korra, but aren’t sure if they want to watch it yet.

here’s a thread on some of the great things this show has to offer, and why it’s worthy of a watch!
many old fans of atla are nostalgic for the series, and this is the main reason why tlok gets a bad rep. it’s a lot different than atla, but it’s still an incredible show.

*i’ll try to keep this thread relatively spoiler free!*
the legend of korra is a four season series, each with about 13 episodes. it stars our protagonist, korra, a 17 year old native girl from the southern water tribe.

it follows her avatar journey as she faces political and spiritual unrest in a modernizing world.
korra is often disliked for her hotheaded, eager, and confident personality. she is pretty spunky, but throughout the series korra matures and grows. her character is very opposite to her past life — aang’s. but their contrast makes for a fun and new watching experience!
sometimes korra’s determined personality gets the best of her. but in the end it helped her learn to accept help from others. she become a lot more kindhearted and learned to be vulnerable. her growth is very admirable.
most of the legend of korra is set in republic city — a city founded by firelord zuko and avatar aang, where anyone from any nation can live together in peace. tlok gives a fun twist to the old avatar world with a modern 1920’s style.
there are cars, radios, movies (movers), and a lot more modern touches to the old avatar world! we see new groups in the city such as the triple threat triads and the metalbending police.
this modernization leads to real-world problems represented in the plot.
rather than one constant villain, in the legend of korra each season is met with a new villain(s). there’s so much variety in the enemies that korra faces. things like chi-blocking equalists and dark spirits kept korra learning new techniques and fighting styles to face them.
korra’s team avatar (the krew) are all really unique and lovable characters! all with pretty engaging backstories and plotlines. we don’t get as deep a dive into their character as the gaang, but they’re still really admirable and sure to give you that soft spot.
tlok’s story is about the new generation, but some of the old gaang members who are alive still make appearances! toph, katara, and zuko get some great interactions with korra and the krew.
the legend of korra gives us more detail on the avatar world than we ever had before. we see so many topics expanded on:
we learn the story of the first avatar! tlok gives so much more detail in book 2 about the spirit world and all things spiritual. we learn about the history of the lion turtles, and we learn about raava the avatar spirit.
we learn about the new generation of airbenders! the air nation is being rebuilt and their story has a lot of heartfelt moments
the new generation topic is also prominent when it comes to family.

we meet aang and katara’s kids, kya, bumi, and tenzin. and tenzin’s family of airbenders that are so wholesome, wild, and sweet. it’s so refreshing seeing new airbenders that are so goofy like aang.
we get to meet toph’s children, lin and suyin. suyin also has an incredible family of her own. the beifong family genes are unmatched 😌
the legend of korra deals with a lot of political topics. things like anarchy and dictatorship are common themes in later seasons. it’s an intriguing concept in contrast to the themes tackled in atla.
in book 1 we see some great flashback scenes that have the gaang in it. their design may be a bit white-washed, but their personalities are still just as lovable.
the animation in the legend of korra is absolutely breathtaking! the colours and landscapes are so impressive and the experience you get watching these cinematic shots is beautiful.
the show has the most beautiful and impactful music! the tlok music combines the old style of music we got in atla with a modern jazz twist to create the most beautiful soundtrack in each season. give it a listen! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lC0qo7i2KzYS6L0lZdrHMoMfVXNIOXq68
the legend of korra has lgbt representation! what they could do was limited because of nickelodeon, but it’s really great seeing lgbt rep in the avatar series, even if it’s minor.
tw // ptsd

this show deals with a lot more mature topics than atla. it’s definitely targeted towards a teenage/older audience. korra goes through realistic mental health struggles. she suffered extreme trauma and dealt with ptsd.
something really important shown in the legend of korra is that recovery isn’t linear. even after being physically healed, korra still struggled mentally. it’s important to represent realistic struggles in kids shows, because they exist.
the mental heath themes depicted in the legend of korra teach audiences compassion and mindfulness. these characters experience realistic issues, and we can learn from them.
the legend of korra isn’t perfect, but it did an incredible job proceeding the masterpiece that is avatar the last airbender.
