Remember when you read about pupils not getting places at Oxbridge etc that no pupil took an exam. Those who got in and those who lost places did nothing themselves - that is how an algorithm works and that is why it is inequitable.
The reason universities are denying places is because they over offer and allow exams to sort who finally comes - again not ideal but that is how we do things and I oversaw that in my own institution for many years. The difference in normal times is students took exams
When the coverage is about the system remember No One Took An Exam. When Ofqual and @BBCNews report that moderation takes place every year that is moderation of exam performance but this year an algorithm has determined students futures with their input - think on that.
We need to reconsider pre qualification admissions to University as a matter of urgency and we need assessment reform to ensure fair outcomes and a robust system. This can never be allowed to happen again.
