I don’t think some North Americans quite realise how many cheap book options they have compared to Intl ppl
and that it can be hard to look at people hauling dozens of books and forget each one didnt cost a couple of hours or even days of pay

For example, a hardback book in Australia minimum cost maybe $35, could easily cost $50. And we have pubs here to make it ~relatively~ cheaper. In Dublin the paperbacks I bought were 30 euro, so 35USD. The hardbacks were like 50 euro
Just don’t think you can have a consumerism on BT / spend what you want convo without acknowledging that it can be VERY alienating to see ppl being able to buy lots of books cheaply
