Some of us are feeling a little anxious around #lockdownnz version 2 with kids – here are some preliminary findings from our @KidsShareNZ survey about kids perceptions of lockdown and some resources that might be helpful (a thread!)…

@FmhsNursing
1. Time with you matters!

Kids appreciated having extra time with whānau – they enjoyed having family members home from work, having meals together, going out for walks together. Family time is one of the most frequently mentioned things that kids liked about being in lockdown
2. Get outside if you can

Kids loved their new car-less neighbourhoods, they mentioned enjoying the quiet and peace, seeing and hearing birds, and being outdoors and in nature. Just going for a walk together is awesome.
3. It’s the simple things

PJ days, watching movies, drawing, playing ball, discovering special “thinking spots,” filling a “gratitude jar,” putting up teddies or art for the NZ Bear Hunt, hunting for bears and just having time to "chill" were all appreciated.
4. Here are some free resources that might help:

First up: https://www.tepapa.govt.nz/learn/for-educators/free-downloadable-activity-books

Thank you @TePapa_Learning for these amazing resources. We loved completing the Te reo Māori book during last lockdown 💖
5. https://www.mylockdowndiary.com

Fabulous diary by Stephen McCarthy full of kids activities & downloadable as a powerpoint for those of us without a printer. If kids complete the outside pages we’d love for them to upload them to our survey: https://tinyurl.com/KidsshareNZ
6. https://theeducationhub.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Bear-goes-into-lockdown-Book-1-5.pdf

These 'Bear goes into lockdown' books written by Carol Mutch can be really helpful to help discuss challenging issues with kids.
8. Not only is the NZ Bear Hunt an amazing activity, the website has loads of resources on it as well. Definitely worth a visit. Many thanks to Deb Hoffman for her amazing work here. https://bearhunt.co.nz/
10. And closer to home, HeiHei has tamariki-friendly games and videos:

13. And of course there's loads of other local galleries, museums, libraries etc. that have free activities for kids.

To finish off this thread, here is a beautiful poem submitted to our @kidssharenz survey by “Lizzie” in two parts, we hope this brings you some joy….
14.

I remember the birdsong
Music in the peace
I remember the quiet roads
Running down the middle of an empty street
But I also remember the people
Walking, running, cycling
Climbing Maungawhau
The atmosphere! The brightness of everyone that passed!...
15.

...Stopping to talk at the gate
Talking from a safe distance
Fresh air and beautiful nature
I remember noticing things
Things like flowers
Cloud shapes
The beauty of a garden
And spotting those waving from the windows
Little bears watching the world pass
Smiling
Sending thoughts and aroha out to everyone – keep safe, be kind, kia kaha Aotearoa
