Dear @GavinWilliamson, last night I slept well for the first time in a week. I’ve been watching the headlines about A levels and worrying myself to death about my kid’s future. My husband has been ringing academic colleagues to find out the state of play. Frantic ....and...
Yesterday as feared she had been downgraded. She was already a bit stuffed as various things had screwed her over a bit and she had extenuating circumstances and we didn’t expect her to do as well but expected her to pull it back in exam. She never got that chance as many didn’t
So when we woke up to a pretty dire situation of low grades and being in clearing I had already prepared. We had a script, a list of uni hotlines, two computer screens, 3 iPhones, step dad ringing round colleagues downstairs at the same time. We were on it. How lucky we are
Because she’s bright. Really bright. But you’d left her in a terrible situation. You left kids up and down the land in a mess. Clearing had no real idea what to tell us in some cases. They just suggested waiting and appealing.
But and here’s the big thing ... we, as parents, knew what to do. I spoke to the academics who would have confused her if she’d been alone. I have English as a first language, I’ve been to Uni and I know the system. How many working class kids did you screw over yesterday?
How many kids with parents without a uni education for whom UCAS is a mystery sorting hat of magical decisions? Poor kids. Kids without laptops. Kids whose parents have English as a second language. You know ... the most disadvantaged kids. So while my baby was rescued
How many poor kids from working class backgrounds, black and multi ethnic kids, the poorest kids who should be most helped were just left at the side of your academic car crash? You need to sort this mess out. @GavinWilliamson ... this is a national disgrace.
You can follow @JeanHatchet.
