James Lindsay has all his complicated stuff about critical theory in academia to explain the popularity of much of what is going on. I'm sure that is true but it doesn't tell us why now. Why was this the year it all blew up? I think I can explain that - Bernie Sanders. 1/7
I don't blame him personally for it; he probably has no involvement in this movement. Bernie Sanders' campaign built up a nationwide network of small activist cells with coordinated messaging and significant funding. 2/7
Polling meant to support him made him look popular and that, along with a friendly media, convinced these people that they were finally going to bring socialism to America. 3/7
When super Tuesday came around and Joe Biden predictably blew them all away, they realized that they could never get what they want through democratic elections. The organization was there, the money was there, and now the religious fervor of their revolution was at its peak. 4/7
To have all that revolutionary energy build up only for the leader to suddenly quit and disappear, there is only one possible result. I had expected terrorism and riots to begin soon after, but we immediately got hit by the lockdowns instead. 5/7
Now what we've got is the combined threat of a communist uprising with rioting driven mostly by lockdown energy. Young men and women in America are the same animals they always were anywhere else and don't like being caged. 6/7
The game now is to bring back lockdowns or maintain unemployment to keep that energy up. They have been successful in gaining significant concessions from the Democrats and winning the progressives a place in the party, now they just need to win the election. 7/7
