I’m getting the impression that the election will be ultimately decided by those who work hard, follow the law, do the right thing by their fellow man/woman and just want society to calm the heck down.

And both campaigns have to make the case that they deserve their votes.
Americans have an unmovable sense of fairness. Unlike some other places on Earth, we aren’t content to shrug off corruption and injustice as things beyond our control. And while some riot and loot and destroy, most decent people wait with one eye open for the terror to end.
Democrats would be wise to come out more strongly against these efforts. The vast majority of Americans are good and decent, and they’re being held hostage by a tiny minority wreaking havoc on civil society out of boredom or some misshapen political ideology.
To normal people, this stuff isn’t, well, normal. What’s happening in Portland, Seattle, Chicago - most people know it’s not right. It’s scaring a lot of folks otherwise sympathetic to Dems. They’re foolish not to take a stand. Their silence, as the saying goes, is compliance.
