Tbh I am against forcing people into doing things to improve themselves because I think people will automatically be resistant to them BUT we need some widespread schooling initiative for adults because American adults are so dumb and morally bankrupt it actually scares me
Like I watch quick news segments on Covid on YouTube on occasion and the comments section is absurd...people screaming psuedoscience and town-crying about fake news. I saw someone with the most basic comment “we need to value human life” and someone replied “turn off your tv”
Like what does that mean?? Conservatives are the most brainwashed, sensitive people on earth and yet they act tough and resist any ideological criticism with this empty call to “fake news” that isn’t grounded in any awareness of how actual corporate media is constructed in favor
of the ruling class & American imperial interests but obvs conservatives don’t have a critical, material understanding of the world so they yell ~fake news~ at the big loud CNN man and then smile along to the big loud Fox News man with the affect of a fan supporting
a baseball game. Americans are so largely pathetic, I’m sorry! I myself am too! And it’s not just conservatives -liberals are not off the hook either. The whole ~believe science~ mantra bothers me a bit bc you cannot treat science as a fact! Sciences are related to
processes and theories, so all the science we know is subject to human error, and thus social prejudices/inequality can lead to bad science like eugenics or that absurd human overpopulation model. So like yeah, the coronavirus is real & we have to take measures to protect
ourselves from it but this weird savior complex defender-of science model props up doctors and scientists in a way that can be harmful, especially to Black, brown, and Indigenous communities which have disproportionately suffered /died from the virus. Glorifying science as fact
Removes it from any analysis of the social conditions which inform how scientific processes and theories are put into practice! I think this terrible coronavirus crisis has really shed light on many peoples deeply dysfunctional views of humanity - conservative OR liberal
Anyways, this is a long thread but I’m circling back to my main point! I’ve been trying to do more abolitionist reading so I’ve really been thinking of the systems in our society which produce the illusion of control and surveillance. Sometimes I think to myself
“ugh I just want to put all these people with horrible opinions into some school and they can learn to be empathetic and good people.” But obviously this is a horrible, silly perspective because it wouldn’t work, and honestly that POV mimics the conditions I was schooled in
My public school was all about control! So many institutions were designed to make me feel like I had to behave a certain way, look a certain way, think a certain way - I’m sure this experience is universal to many others in public American schools! But this is not
genuine education. Genuine education involves both students and teacher working with one another to understand the world around them and build skills, but this education also should make people feel a sense of purpose. To do this, they have to put this thinking into practice-
theory/thinking cannot exist in solely the mind but should be used to better your communities. So I would love to see more widespread educational opportunities like this exist in the country! Obviously there are SO MANY people who NEED to be educated in this way, but the sad
thing is, as much as I believe this approach to education - a mutual desire to radically understand history/the world- is liberating, many people would be super resistant to it! And you cannot force people to take part in it. People can only learn and grow as people
When they consent to that growth. Of course, I think people are more inclined to growth when their material conditions are improved -when they have basic necessities, housing, and a community to support/be supported by, so of course helping build these communities is essential,
but I’m not sure what one should do with those super resistant people? How do we encourage those people to overcome their brain rot and approach a radical education, is it even possible?Anyways I’m sorry for the long twitter rant I’m working through ideas and Twitter is my diary!
