The analysis is trash. There aren’t examples of other panics because that’s not a thing. If anything the left is struggling to overcome impunity for sexual violence in media and political spaces just like everyone else. Sometimes ppl get it wrong. https://twitter.com/wneuheisel/status/1294087083427008513
We broadly lack skills, tools, organization, culture, resources, etc. to better interrupt violence, and our “public safety” institutions are some of the biggest enablers & perpetrators of it. It’s one reason people have been protesting all summer. This is shaming ppl for caring.
Pinning this on “the left is dumb” is convenient for attempting to write something pithy and snarky in jacobin. But it’s also vapid and completely devoid of the context in which people are struggling to respond to violence.
I do not know what we should tell people they should have done in the moment — not in hindsight, but as it was unfolding. The author apparently doesn’t either. Why not grapple with that tension?
The mocking tone around “harm” and “power dynamics” in a piece about sexual violence published in a socialist magazine is fucking embarassing
