People are going to respond to this by complaining about the Senate. But Democrats are forgetting that politics is also part of politics, it’s not all mechanical vote-counting. We’re in a profound national crisis but they’re by and large still using their inside voices
There are literally an infinite number of speeches, media stunts, and other political maneuvers Dems could use to try to frustrate Trump’s plans. The party has developed a paralyzing delusion that such things are dark magic, only available to the GOP.
I mean for starters they could relaunch impeachment against Trump and the Postmaster General, which would instantly receive massive coverage and raise the issue’s profile. They could withhold funding. They could refuse to recess, do a sit-in, demand tours of postal facilities
The irony here is that Democrats think of government and politics as a series of rules - “We have the power to do X, you have the power to do Y” - except whenever they invoke those rules, Trump ignores them anyway. And Dems go “Well there’s no rule that forces him to obey rules”
Eventually Democrats have to develop a model of politics that doesn’t entirely rely on the idea that all power derives from the constitutional rulebook, because the Constitution is made of paper, cannot enforce itself, and folks, I think Trump has started to figure that out
