Bear with me on this.
Trump is suing Linn and Johnson counties in eastern Iowa for sending out pre-filled absentee ballot forms. The intended recipient simply verifies the information, signs, dates and returns it in a prepaid envelope. Eastern Iowa traditionally votes Democrat.
The cities affected are Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. To the north of them is Waterloo, also a Democratic stronghold, where postal union officials reported sorting equipment was removed.
Iowa is a swing state, the eastern half predictably Democrat and the western half Republican.
Western Iowa is home to the infamous Rep. Steve King. You can bet it’s Trump Country. An attack on voting in eastern Iowa could very well tip Iowa in Trump’s favor in November.
Willamette Week in Oregon reports mailboxes are being removed in liberal Portland and Eugene.
I don’t know if this is a pattern in other liberal areas. You can’t check in Cedar Rapids or Iowa City because the region was hit by a derecho, essentially an inland hurricane, on Monday. The wind knocked down thousands of trees. Roads are blocked. Utility poles were blown down.
The city of Cedar Rapids was hardest hit. Most of the city is still without power. No lights, no ATMs or cash registers. No working gasoline pumps. You can’t navigate the debris anyway. No gas stoves since there were breaks. Many homes and businesses are smashed or torn apart.
A lot of the trees were huge, a century old or more. Out-of-state charities advertise they have chainsaws to cut through the tons of debris. Xavier, Jefferson, Kennedy... the high schools’ roofs were peeled away and heavy rain poured in. This hurricane tore this city apart.
Just outside the city are tangled, twisted grain bins. Ten million acres of corn were flattened. To you non-farming folks, that’s 15,625 square miles. The whole state is 56,273 square miles. Des Moines, about 115 miles west, and farms and cities in between, also suffered damage.
Residents say the damage in Cedar Rapids may even surpass the flooding of 2008. That would mean the worst disaster in a century. And in the midst of this, the president of the United States is trying to hobble their right to vote, using lawsuits and the postal service.
