Going into fall, I really hope academics are evaluating ways their new online instruction policies may be ableist.
Online classes are hard, ESPECIALLY for students with learning disabilities, on the spectrum, etc. The replacement for holistic hands-on assessment should not just be online recall tests, as that comes with huge disparities for certain student populations.
It is our job as instructors to empower students to succeed DESPITE this pandemic, not to fail and weed people out of their programs because that’s what is easiest. It’s tough to teach online, but “professor” is a privileged position so we better live up to that responsibility.
This thread is the nice version of the WORDS I have for the professor that just did this to a family member. Professors who cop out like this do not deserve to work with students.
