Is it just me, or is the whinging and whining about the noveau riche teams having some #UCL success (still not won anything in Europe, mind you) a bit silly? Especially when they come from supporters of traditionally big clubs who dominated for much of the 80s, 90s and 00s?
I've seen the SF between PSG and RB Leipzig described as "uninspiring". Okay, so what would have been? I guess Bayern v Barca - a tie we've seen numerous times in recent years by two of the biggest, most wealth clubs in the world - is then?
How many billions has PSG spent? And this is their first UCL semi-final since their takeover? Clearly, money isn't everything. RB Leipzig obviously benefactors of very rich owners, but can you class them in the same bracket as a City or PSG?
And let's not forget, both those teams come from leagues which for the most part of my living memory have traditionally been dominated by one team anyway. When I was growing up, Lyon won seven straight Ligue 1 titles. Bundesliga still utterly dominated by Bayern Munich.
If anything, the lack of success relative to the amounts invested in PSG, City, Leipzig (PSG the only team that has really enjoyed sustained success every year) demonstrates just how entrenched the old guard really is at the top of the game.
As a #MUFC fan, sure, it's hard to watch a City rise so quickly and become such a force, but in many ways it highlights the ineptitude of United's own management. Utd would be in the relative mess they're in (still much better off than the most) regardless of City.
And in many ways the rise of City has actually made the EPL that much more unpredictable. Completely upset the apple cart of the "top four" for instance that was almost static for most of my early days watching football.
EPL has had 5 champs in last 10 years, including a relatively fluid top four. Germany has had 2. France has had 4. Italy has had 2.
Football has been about the haves and have-nots for a very, very long time now. If there's a few new clubs who can enter the realm of the 'haves', I don't really see the issue.
If the issue is with overall concentration of wealth in football to select few, that's fair enough. But it's a bit rich to take that stance if you support a MUFC, LFC, Barca, Real, Juve or Munich etc.
I don't see why the clubs who have been the target of heavy investment should be the subject of such big investment should be ridiculed or blown off as shallow. It's literally the only way you can compete on a year-to-year basis.
