Only three more days until National Airborne Day on Sunday. Today we want to showcase a few of the items used by @18airbornecorps #Paratroopers during WWII on display in the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum.
The uniform was worn by Lt. Col. Herman Alley from the 319th Glider Artillery Battalion during the Normandy Campaign.
In the top right is a standard rope or lowering line used by Paratroopers to lower themselves to the ground from an elevated and unwanted landing.
The parachute was used by a Paratrooper in the 505th during Operation NEPTUNE and was found outside of the town of Ste. Mere Eglise, France 1944.
Above the parachute is the Rebecca transceiver used with the red light above by pathfinders to signal a beacon to guide aircraft to their assigned drop zone safely.
The measuring tool directly above the transceiver is a slide ruler, used to calculate load and balance on the CG-4A Waco Glider.
Finally, here are two photos of the M1A1 Carbine and M1 – Rifle used by Paratroopers from 1942 to 1963.
