[Sent with Invisible Ink] I kinda feel for Zach Plesac
believe me, completely inclined to hate it. irresponsible, shouldn't be celebrated, catching strays as a journalist, but quietly illustrates the absurd toll even the more privileged among us are under to keep ourselves and others safe
think about some of what Derek Jeter claimed the Marlins were doing that may have facilitated their outbreak:
- talking to their teammates
- buying coffee
- grabbing coffees

they weren't clubbing, licking train poles or breaking test vials to see what would happen
meanwhile, a ballplayer's whole ass job (even with the protocols) is a flagrant exception to the rule of consensus or CDC guidelines on curbing the spread of the virus. literally, they aren't subject to the same rules, their teams are seeking exemptions on quarantines etc
meanwhile MLB’s protocols and federal, state and local rules have been poorly communicated and, at times, inscrutable. when the Marlins were allowed to play a baseball game while suffering an outbreak, they were being compliant. and that's a problem
meanwhile, Plesac claimed he tried to understand what constitutes a safe gathering and found, even consulting a doctor and found:
- the rules and guidelines vary by state
- his dinner with friends met the CDC standards
but MLB established an indefinite abstinence-only style framework for player socialization while teams could persuade local health depts to let their players break city and state laws.
And for what? So Ted Lerner’s net worth stays at 4.8 billion instead of 4.73b? foh
