How to Launch a Successful Podcast in 2020 and Beyond

There are over 1 million podcast shows on iTunes.

Most are not growing or making any money.

This thread will show you how to do both.

But why should you listen to me?
1. My show (The 6-Figure Roadmap) was New & Noteworthy & Top #200 in the business category in the first 24 hours after launch

2. It averaged 5,000 downloads per week

3. The guests were ALL 7, 8, & 9-figure business owners

4. Thousands of $$ can be credited back to the podcast
Ok, I'm done flexing, you're here to learn how to do this.

*Disclaimer*

I am only experienced in one type of podcast (interviews), however, what I am about to teach you will work for any podcast you want to create.

Also, my results are not guaranteed. You must do the work.
Not included in this thread:

a. Building a podcast website
b. Automation for booking guests
c. Scripting an interview or story
d. Organization & Management with G-Suite or Trello
e. How to record a podcast episode
f. The behind-the-scenes of a successful launch
1. The 3 types of podcasting:

a. 1-on-1 interviews
b. Storytelling
c. Informative

Choosing a podcast type needs to be based on your expertise, interest, and comfortability.
1-on-1 interviews are great for networking, partnerships, and leveraging others' expertise.

If you're uncomfortable asking questions or talking to others, this may not be the best route for you to go.

Examples:

- The Joe Rogan Experience
- The Tim Ferris Show
Storytelling can be one of the most successful types of podcasts to create.

Despite what your goals are for your podcast, everyone wants to be entertained.

Example:

- Anything by the Parcast Network
- Crime Junkie
Informative podcasts can have strong storytelling elements as well.

Others are strictly informational.

Examples:

- The Daily
- Snacks Minute
- Stuff You Should Know
2. Choose your niche

Start with the following:

a. A Topic
b. Sub-niche
c. A niche within a niche

Ex. Business => Starting a business => Making First 6-Figures

Ex. Storytelling => Fiction => Horror Stories

Ex. Science => Neuroscience => Psilocybin Effects
3. Equipment & Software (least important)

a. Headphones
(Sony XB950B1 Extra Bass Wireless Headphones)

b. Microphone
(Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB Microphone)

c. Boom Arm
(NEEWER Adjustable Microphone Boom)

d. Shock Mount
(Neewer Black Universal Microphone Shock Mount)
e. Editing Software
(Garage Band)

f. Hosting Software
(Simplecast, Libsyn, Acast)

g. Recording Software
(Zoom, Skype)

h. Noise Cancelling
(Acoustic Studio Panels, Krisp(.)ai)

i. Any computer made after 2015
4. Design & Branding

Elements for a great cover photo:

a. Stands out and catches people's eye

b. Use a headshot for personal branding
(personally not a huge fan of this)

c. Pay a designer on Fiverr or Upwork to design it

d. File size should be 3000 x 3000
Additional "nice to haves":

a. Voice over intro/outro
(Music Radio Creative)

b. Audio Clips to highlight episodes
(headliner(.)app)

c. Mic Flag
(On Air Mic Flags)
5. Launching & Promoting Podcast

This is arguably the most important process of your podcast journey.

A successful launch and promotion can lead to instant credibility, an engaged audience, and eventual monetization.
First, you must whole-heartedly believe in your podcast. If you have even the slightest doubt, you will not take full advantage of the initial boost your podcast can have upon release.

It must be something you want to invite EVERYONE to listen to.
Second, you need to have at least 5-7 episodes recorded, edited, and ready to release.

We live in a binge culture. It's important to give your listeners a broad selection to choose from.

Once this is done, it's time to set a launch date.
When choosing a launch date, study other podcasts in your category to see when the most popular days to upload are.

You want to release your episodes (weekly, monthly, whatever) on days that are the LEAST popular.

Doing this gives your show a greater chance of being discovered
Next comes the fun part. You are going to tell EVERYONE you know about your new podcast.

Tell your Facebook friends, Twitter followers, email list, phone contacts, your neighbors, and even random people on the street.

You want as much attention as possible before you launch.
The strategy is important though. You don't want to depend on those people to show up on their own.

People need to be told what to do.

Getting these people into one collective place is SUPER important.

My favorite way to do this is to invite everyone to a Facebook Group.
A Group will allow you to:

a. Collect emails
b. Stay in front of them with live videos and step-by-step instructions
c. Pre-validate your podcast by pre-releasing an episode for feedback or having them vote on your artwork
Once you have everyone in a place that you can make announcements and updates, it's time to build HYPE.

Spend money on prizes and create a giveaway for the top 3 people to invite the most friends to your group.

This creates word of mouth and another way to collect emails.
It's now time to LAUNCH!

iTunes' algorithm requires that you have a certain amount of subscribers, downloads, ratings, & reviews in a 24-72 hour window to reach New & Noteworthy.

This is vital for your initial credibility and iTunes will reward you by highlighting your show
On the date that you set to release your podcast (with 5-7 interviews already uploaded), you need to spend the next 24 hours promoting the hell out of it.

Go LIVE on social media, email your list, call your friends and family.
I created a video walkthrough of me going to iTunes, downloading my podcast, giving it 5 stars, and leaving a review.

You want there to be 0 excuses as to why the people that are supporting you cannot do those 3 simple things.

New & Noteworthy and Top Charts come next.
