The Huskies were an up and down team in '19, but the defense was consistently pretty good. The offense was a real roller coaster and fell off down the stretch. Special teams took a big step forward in '19 vs. '18.
Washington has been really consistent on the defensive side of the ball and we expect that to continue under Lake with Kwiatosksi back at DC, but the offense clearly needed a change after falling off post Smith.
Washington's recruiting has been on a very solid trend upward and they handled their production losses on defense incredibly well last season, better than '17, and we really like how that bodes. The offense has a big challenge there this season.
Washington did improve on Drive Efficiency in '19, but made negligible progress or fell off on 3 of core 4 Beta_Rank metrics. They really need to focus on getting more explosive a d avoiding 3 and outs in '20.
You can see the Huskies decline towards conference average on both offensive phases. Many teams with a lot less talent across the board put up better offensive numbers than the Huskies the last two years. Scheme and playcalling were the culprit.
Washington held steady on 3 of the core 4 Beta_Rank metrics and then fell off a tad in Play Efficiency, but produced a #10 defense despite the lack of returning production. With more back this season, and Kwiatosksi calling plays, expect the Huskies to improve.
The Huskies have been very consistent against the run, and other than some hiccups with their '17 pass defense, mostly very good against the pass of late. Talent comes back at all levels in '20.
