THREAD - parallels between the sequels and the prequels, part 3 : the Rise of Skywalker.
Overall, Rey’s arc in the rise of Skywalker is very similar to Anakin’s in the Revenge of the Sith. These two movies are about the two young Jedi’s struggle with their inner darkness.

Rey and Anakin are far away from their masters, allowing them to develop alone. Because of this, both are much more vulnerable to the dark side.
Because of this vulnerability, Rey and Anakin keep tapping into the dark side, which both immediately regret. But hatred and anger keeps growing inside of them ...
Another character shares similarities with Anakin is Kylo Ren.
When Kylo meets Palpatine, he wants to kill him yet submits himself to him because of the promise of more power ("a New Empire")
Anakin submits himself to Palpatine for more power, to save Padmé.

Anakin submits himself to Palpatine for more power, to save Padmé.
And interestingly enough, both of the characters’s nemesis of the previous movie were actually Sidious’s puppets to challenge the young Skywalker men.
Our heroes go on an adventure to deliver an ally but get caught by a new general of the enemy’s army
This is followed by a nice visual parallel. Rey confronts Kylo, Obi Wan confronts Anakin. Two enemies connected by a powerful bond
The battle on the second Death Star’s wreckage obviously parallels the battle of the heroes. The difference between the environments give much more impact to the outcome of the duel : Kylo’s redemption and Anakin’s fall.
in ROTS, a Palpatine uses the "power to cheat death" to manipulate a Skywalker. In TROS, a Palpatine uses force healing to save a Skywalker, through compassion. Rey helps Kylo Ren to come back to the light whilst Sidious made Anakin fall to the dark side.
Ben Solo’s return to the light side occurs at almost the same time in TROS than Anakin’s fall in ROTS.
Leia reached out to Ben and he made the decision to come back whilst Padmé reached out to Anakin and he made the decision to go to the dark side

The big battle finally starts. The battle of Exegol and the battle of Coruscant both decided the fate of the Galaxy. One takes place at the beginning of the movie, emphasising on the idea that the galaxy is already lost. The other happens at the end : Hope is not lost.
Whilst the Galaxy is doomed in ROTS with the senate accepting its submission to darkness and Clones being enslaved, in TROS the Galaxy and former stormtrooper rise against Palpatine’s oppression.
Rey arrives to the Sith temple to confront Palpatine. Anakin arrives to the Jedi temple to kill all the Jedi.
Despite the similarities of their arcs, one chose the Light and compassion, the other chose Darkness and hatred.

Ben Solo comes to help Rey to fight Palpatine.
Unlike Anakin, he sides with his allies rather than Sidious. His arc completely mirrors Anakin’s. One rises in the light, the other falls in the darkness.

Rey confronts Palpatine by deflecting his own lightning on himself. A pure defensive move, true to the Jedi’s values.
Windy and Yoda failed because, unlike Rey, they were alone. The Jedi were lost already. With the help of all the Jedi, Rey finally defeated Sidious.

As sad as it is, Leia’s death mirrors Padmé’s. Both women did everything to save the person they loved the most. Only one succeeded.
The war is over. Rey reunites with her friends, her family, "her Light". On the other hand, Anakin will never see his family again. Rey found her family, Anakin lost it.
At the end of TROS, Rey goes to tatooine to pay homage to the Skywalker family.
She symbolically buries Luke, Leia and Anakin next to Shmi, finally reuniting the family.
Whilst Shmi’s funeral seems hopeless, Rey burying the lightsaber feels like a new hopeful start

Once upon a time, a Skywalker fell and brought darkness, suffering, pain and war to the galaxy.
Years later, a girl from nowhere saved the Galaxy from oppression and redeemed the Skywalker name. Her name was Rey, the rising Skywalker.

Hope is never lost. New generations of heroes will always rise against evilness. Anakin Skywalker fell, the Galaxy is lost but there is still hope. Rey Skywalker rose, saved the Galaxy and now looks toward a future full of new adventures with her Family.
Thank you so much for reading all these three threads. I hope you enjoyed it. May the Force be with you
