I’m going to tell you what’s bothering me about schools and it is some really groundbreaking shit. Call me a helicopter parent or suggest I homeschool my kids today, I dare you.
This is my sons baseball, it’s every baseball game. No dugouts allowed, kids in chairs 6 feet apart. No “bonding”, no cheering. It’s shitty, but we tell them this is what is the safest option right now. They believe us.
This is a small example of the countless things I’ve told my kids to ensure they’re safe and informed of what is allowed and what isnt. For 5 months, they have clung to my every word about COVID-19. They trust me more than anyone in the world trusts me.
They know I will do everything in my power to keep them safe. I’ve always told them that’s my job. They think I wouldn’t send them into a building with 420 kids unless I was confident it was a great idea. I’m not. I’m just pretending it is for their sake.
What’s bothering me the most is it feels like I’m lying to my kids. The most important thing in my world. They are TRUSTING me to make the right decisions, and I have no choice but to trust those in charge that this is going to be what’s best and “safest” for my kids.
Teachers are saints, they really truly are. They’re terrified. But they’re going to show up anyways and do everything they can to keep YOUR child safe because they really, really care about them. That is what’s giving me peace of mind.
Thank a teacher today, because they are taking on a job they never asked for to make sure the most important thing in your life is receiving their right to a proper education during a pandemic. They’re superheroes.
