#PeriodLeave #HotTake Meh, why not yes?
Once upon a time, I was that 'feminist' who thought having separate seats for women on buses was 'special treatment'. I was an ignorant idiot. But geez, even THAT bad take is better than the 'feminists' fighting against period leave.
We should all, always, strive to continuously evolve. And at some point, our 'feminism' should go beyond wanting to 'be' cis straight privileged men who occupy positions of power everywhere, and start QUESTIONING why the world is built for them.
Having more non-cis-men in workplaces shouldn't mean everyone should then become these men to occupy space. It doesn't mean we have to deny our bodies are different, our needs are different, and different doesn't mean 'less than'.
Powerful cis straight privileged women today have become their cis straight privileged male oppressors in many workplaces. Sister, how does that change anything?
And frankly by rubbishing the demand for period leave, you're only batting on the side of employers who want their employees to work 24x7x365. You're not batting for equal workplaces and all -- please. You're just being one of the boys to maintain the status quo.
We need kinder, more flexible workplaces and leadership that understands that people need to take time off because we're all human beings, not robots.
At the end of the day, jobs are jobs -- no matter how much passion we have for them. We should not be defined by how long we work and how many leaves we don't take.
So, if you don't want to take leave -- period or otherwise -- then please feel free to not take it. When books are written about you I'm sure the fact that you never took period leave will be praised by some cis straight privileged man.
Leave the rest of us, who don't want to become those men, alone. Pliss.
