I read a really great essay by someone in Africa wondering why black Americans support politicians who do such heinous things to African countries. It’s a great point and sadly most of us don’t know any better. And that was done deliberately.
Y’all already know why most of us are poor and disadvantaged. That means that our schools are underfunded and overcrowded *and* not telling us the truth about current American foreign policy and how it affects the lives of people living in those countries.
Americans have been deliberately taught to be very centered on this country. Our electoral system is not set up so that everyone’s vote counts. And so most black Americans rally behind whichever candidate is going to hurt *us* the least.
The truth is that until the system changes there is no such thing as a US president who will do the right thing both domestically & abroad. So I understand those who refuse to participate. But I also understand the people who hold tight to the one tiny piece of “power” we have.
Overall we don’t focus on other countries because we don’t have to. Living over here is like living in a bubble. And black Americans truly do not understand that we may be privileged compared to black people outside this country because shit here is the fuck awful for us.
