The for-profit news industry's perceived competition with nonprofit news is totally wild to me. There are intricacies here but I've studied the language of nonprofits and nearly nothing is mentioned as much/valued as much is collaboration. ?/1
Ofc this is in response to the Post-Gazette's decision to cut ties with @SpotlightPA. Journalism from nonprofits like Spotlight, shared across platforms and reaching wide audiences through partnerships is journalism at its best. It's also what journalism is becoming.
Collaborating with nonprofits costs for-profit newspapers little to nothing. The goal of these nonprofit organizations is literally to fill in the gaps and complement existing coverage, then to share those stories ... without gaining a profit
From my perspective, the Post-Gazette cut ties because Spotlight's coverage draws attention to a lack of similar coverage from our organization. It demonstrates that their values aren't in line with those innovative forms of journalism value, and ones that benefit an audience.
And that, my friends, is because the Blocks do not care about our audience. They care about money, and the PG is lucky its employees are willing to slog through labor disputes because of a dedication to audience.
Sorry haven't done a good thread in a while but yeah I wrote my thesis on nonprofits so do not test me lol
