So @StreetSmartRD wanted to ruin my day and I obliged by listening to that @JillianMichaels video on the drive to work. Yikes. Here are my thoughts
First off, as soon as Jillian starts the video with “intuitive eating...I’ve gotten a lot of questions about this but, in my opinion?” I literally said out loud “stop talking.” As a non-nutrition professional your opinion is already in the red on value. Sorry!
Her knock on the “unconditional permission to eat” principle is well-intentioned, but the problem with Jillian is she’s dealt with people trying to lose weight her entire career and doesn’t seem to grasp the fact that people’s relationship with food goes far beyond weight loss
Now, Jillian’s knock against throwing out diet culture is absolute horsesh*t. We should TOTALLY be throwing out diet culture and doubts that a better diet is out there and if Jillian disagrees with that it’s clear she does because it threatens her “wellness” empire
Lastly, I literally almost ran the car off the road when she called herself trying to define how and why eating disorders develop. Diets only exacerbate the problem? We only get them because we weren’t loved enough in our childhood??? Are you a therapist now too? Please stop.
I‘m a sports RD, but I started this field as a personal trainer and can’t tell you how wacky and wrong the nutrition information out there is in fitness. Women like Jillian are party to that. If there are any fitness nutrition topics you’d like me to clear up, please let me know
