Jorginho, Sarri's Son to Regular Starter to Outcast:
A Thread
The brazil-born Italian hasn't had a shortage of criticism in his first season after he followed his gaffer from Italian side Napoli to Stamford Bridge. Under Sarri, Jorginho found himself as a regular starter, at the time which saw us win the Europa League and finish 3rd in PL.
However the fans weren't convinced with him. He was booed by his own fans at Stamford Bridge. Sarri was accused of favouritism and that was one of the key reasons fans disliked him even more. Things did however get better for the former Napoli midfielder after a pretty successful
season under Maurizio Sarri. He won over majority of fans and was elected as the vice-captain the following season under club legend Frank Lampard. He became a regular starter alongside Mateo Kovacic, the duo played rather impressively under the absence of N'golo Kanté.
It was until the Covid-19 hit, that the same would go on. Chelsea were handed a huge boost as N'golo Kanté recovered from injury. This however was a blow for Jorginho as he found himself on the bench for the opening few games. This was mainly because of a change in the
system which saw Chelsea play much more attacking football. This sudden change meant that Chelsea needed someone who is physical and is good defensively. Jorginho clearly didn't fit. He found himself below 19 year-old Billy Gilmour in the pecking order. Hence the rumours began.
He was linked to a move to Juventus which would've seen him reunite with Sarri but soon Sarri was sacked, putting the transfer seem unlikely. But the question remains is whether he actually is good enough to stay or not.
One of the biggest flaws of Jorginho is said to be his defensive quality. However the midfielder registers 2.1 tackles and 2.1 interceptions per game. He also has the most no. of interceptions and 2nd most recoveries for Chelsea this season. The following shows a better picture:
Jorginho is a regista. Or better known as Deep lying playmaker. He has the most no. of passes into the final third per 90.
A comparison between Jorginho and other top defensive midfielders from the league. Also to add, Jorginho is NOT a natural defensive midfielder but yet has put out good numbers.
In his day, Jorginho is an exceptional midfielder when played to his strength and can control the tempo of the game which was quite evident when he came on at the 80th minute against Crystal Palace. Chelsea have had more possession in almost all the games they have played this
season, thanks to Jorginho's ability to move the ball around. Another notable quality of his is his leadership. He played an important role in inspiring his teammates for a comeback against Ajax when they were 3-1 down. He is an amazing character to have on the field.
Conclusion:
Jorginho is a very valuable asset for any manager who plays possession-based football. Whether he fits into Lampard's plans or system is something only Lampard himself can say for certain. But one thing is for sure, no other player has divided the fans as much as him.
He is also one of the few players in modern football who actually can play naturally as a 'regista' , a role which doesn't fit much into PL football. Some other well known registas include Legends like Andrea Pirlo and Xabi Alonso. Here's a link from @TifoFootball_ that explains
more about the 'regista' role:
