I almost didn’t apply to tenure-track positions at R1 institutions because I didn’t think I was capable or good enough at research. My anxiety level was high during interviews.

News flash: I am and so are you. (Thread)

I went on the academic job market two years. I only applied to 2 R1’s in my first year. At one school, I got trashed. Heard through the grapevine that I wasn’t aggressive or confident enough. The other school I interviewed at was great but I ultimately didn’t get the job.
Let the haters be your motivation. The school that trashed and ghosted me (still waiting for a decline letter...) ignited a fire in me to not ever let a group of men at a table ever tear me apart publicly again. I went into my 2nd year on the academic market determined
My first interview that season was @UcChem. I was nervous of course but I was not about to have a repeat from last year. Luckily everyone was wonderful :) I regained my confidence at that interview.
I interviewed at some more that season. I got some offers but I didn’t get every job I interviewed for. Don’t expect that. And honestly, I got lucky that year. There was a lot of analytical chem jobs that season. Luck is a big component of landing a tenure-track job.
Remind yourself that you are the expert in that room. You know your research. With that said, be humble. Accept criticism but show them you can solve problems by coming up with an alternate solution if your idea gets trashed.
I recognize that I am speaking on this from a position of priveledge. I know not everyone gets these interviews. Being on the other side and now having served on a search committee, it’s hard. There are a TON of excellent candidates. Try try not to take it personally
Also I think it’s pretty typical to have to go on the job market for more than one year so don’t let that discourage you or kill your confidence

Lastly, be open. Have a backup plan. I did and although I was determined to land a prof job, I knew ultimately that it may not happen
This year will be extra tough. Many places aren’t hiring. Everyone is in that same boat. If you do end up getting an interview this season then take pride in that and good luck!
