Folks, I'm so happy that so many of you are having such positive experiences in academia. I really am. Now I want you to take *all* of that energy, and all of your positivity and privilege, and work every day to dismantle toxic climates for PoC in academia. 1/
I love academia as much as you do. But I will criticize it until we do better. I will criticize it every day. That's not catharsis or complaining, that's organizing, empowering, and making change. 2/
White academics ask POC to re-live racial trauma everyday on Twitter. We say: there's racism in academia! And a White academic says: Where? When? Who did this? Show me evidence! And so we do. And then we are told that we are contributing to negativity on Twitter. 3/
I think this is a wonderful time to read or re-read the "BlacknintheIvory" and "BeingapsychologistwhileBlack" hashtags (not hashtagging so as not to co-opt). 4/
We should be worried about students and prospective students feeling anxiety about what academia is like. But if we want to do something about that, let's change the system, not paper over the very real, very valid negative stories BIPOC people are bravely sharing. 5/
Yeah, I love academia too. But you won't catch me being endlessly grateful to a system that has tried to exclude me at every turn. /End
