/ #AlevelResultsday #resultsday thread👉 It's been reported almost 40% of grades have been downgraded for students in England, Wales and NI. This follows results in Scotland where it was found in the most deprived areas only 69% of students received a passing grade.
/ 'A third of college principals reported results lower or "dramatically lower" than their historic exam performance.’ Several colleges are even reporting this is their worst results day ever, and other school leaders calling the results both "unfair" and "unfathomable."
/ Downgraded grades appear to not be based on past, predicted or mock results but about where students live. Essentially a postcode lottery hitting working class students hardest.
/ The biggest gaps between predicted and actual grades is seen amongst the most disadvantaged students.
/ Such a system of grading has left the poorest students out to dry and exposed the classist nature of the education system which only further entrenches inequality between the poorest and most wealthy areas of the country.
/ The lower grades many students received may prevent some from attending further education and gaining additional qualifications, leaving them potentially trapped in poverty.
/ Capitalism claims to be a meritocracy and provide equal opportunity for all, but everyday it proves otherwise. Really it's a birth lottery and the chances are you'll remain in the class you're born in to.
/ Under capitalism, scarcity, lack of funding and the need for profit will ensure competition for resources between schools and it is the well-performing ones who get a greater share.
/ Working class students often don't have the space or time to study at home, may work whilst studying or look after siblings. Upper class students can often afford extra tutoring, access to resources and generally aren't burdened by the harsh realities of being poor.
/ Of course, when a school attended by working class kids does unusually well, or when a school attended by the children of the rich does worse than usual, "moderation" comes to save the day and enforce the status quo.
/ The class background of each new generation thus determines their future, with the education system under capitalism another tool to ensure there is always a new generation of workers and bosses.
/ This results day also comes in the middle of the deepest recession on record and unemployment is expected to reach levels not seen since the 80s. A whole generation of working class youth is being thrown onto the scrap heap and left to fight over whatever jobs remain.
/ It is this cruel system we are fighting to put an end to. We must fight to remove competition and profit from the education system, provide proper funding, and a decent life to all in society. Only this can guarantee a quality education where all can realise their potential.
