Just remembering that super fun time in year 7 when we were given a bunch of instruments and told to write an Aboriginal song.
One of those instruments were bongos. Bongos originate in Cuba.
When I told my teacher that I didn’t know any songs in any Indigenous language, or any words for that matter, she said I should make up words that “sounded Aboriginal”
Fun fact: I didn’t know how fundamentally wrong this was until I did an elective subject in year 9
When I was in year 2 or 3 we had a class where we talked about Dreaming stories. We were encouraged to write about how oral traditions could not be accurate because they were not written down
We really need education on Aboriginal histories and cultures to be taught at a young age. The history of this country should not be something we have to go looking for in adulthood or something we learn because we choose a certain subject.
