taking government quizzes to help me find a job or career i would be suited to and getting very frustrated and annoyed at how the whole job and education system works
i am statistically more likely to perform well in dozens of careers that require college or university education than literally anything available to just a high school graduate, based on my natural abilities and talents. [...]
[...] e.g. i would make a better architect (good at math, design, visualization, and planning) than customer service rep (bad verbal communication and social skills, anxiety dealing with people which would affect performance)
but guess which one i am technically qualified for?
there also seems to be more demand for specific skillsets than basic entry level stuff. i am bombarded by interesting job listings with educational requirements i don't meet, while jobs open to high school graduates detail a bunch of skills i don't have.
thing is, i would love to go to school. i love learning and there are many careers i am interested in. but that is part of the problem; it would be great if i could take courses with the option to change my mind if i find something i am more suited to later... without going [...]
[...] hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt. (assuming i could even get student loans.)
now multiply my situation by every other indecisive middle class canadian who can't afford to make the wrong choice, and every lower class canadian who can't afford school to begin with.
who, as technology advances, are losing all of our simple jobs to machine production, self serve checkouts, automated processes, and artificial intelligence. which would all be exciting and cool if millions of people didn't depend on those roles for food and shelter.
would be cool if i had spent the past 6 years getting a degree or two, maybe starting a fulfilling career, instead of mooching off my parents while unemployed followed by reading scripts and getting yelled at on the phone, then mindlessly entering numbers from paper to computer.
and now facing unemployment again because of my former positions becoming automated or in less demand.

i said i was going to complain about jobs and education but surprise, the underlying issue is capitalism!
if i could even have a small bachelor apartment and just enough pizza and mac & cheese to sustain me while i take a university course. that would be perfect. but nothing is free, work or die oh but also we are reducing the amount of work so just die i guess!
imagine the developments in every field if all the people with jobs being replaced by robots and computers had the freedom to become doctors, researchers, engineers, teachers. not to mention all the amazing art that could be produced, if everyone just had their basic needs met.
which at this point in human history, with the resources available and advancements in technology, is absolutely a possibility!
imagine. the improved systems of global distribution of goods. the renewable energy solutions. the transportation. the scientic innovations.
all the ways life could be improved for people all over the world if the 1% of people with the most power did not have a fetish for having the biggest number next to their name.
because yes, this thread is about not having to pay for education and food and shelter. if you are someone who believes money is real and necessary and not a social construct that society could completely function without, then where is the money going to come from?
from the people who stole it from everyone else in the first place through slavery, wage theft, gentrification, and unfair financial laws, and those who inherited wealth from them!
also if anyone sees this and wants to argue that people would be lazy and not work if they had their needs met by default... good? why should they, if there are no positions available. we don't need to make more jobs for the sake of employment.
if you are the type of person who thinks that not working is more enjoyable than working, then consider: in this hypothetical society, you yourself could just not work, instead of doing something you dislike just to complain about other people not doing it.
and if you are the type of person who does prefer to work: great! you have the opportunity to do what you enjoy, so why concern yourself with other people enjoying different things than you? leave them the opportunity to enjoy not working! let's let *everyone* be happy!
but something else a lot of folks don't seem to realize: most people aren't actually inherently lazy. people hate working now because, like me, they only have things they don't enjoy accessible to them. most people don't want to chill and do nothing their whole lives!
people want to do stuff, to contribute to society and help each other. it is natural for humans, as a social species. meeting everyone's basic needs allows them to find the best way they can do that.
but there is also the issue of defining work by something we are paid to do. not working gives people more freedom to do things they enjoy. making art and music, camping, having karaoke nights or barbecues with friends and loved ones. i think these are all good things to do.
but also think about it: hosting a potluck for example, you have to handle venue and scheduling. everyone involved is generally going to bring something they've cooked. all this takes time, resources, and effort. that is to say, it is unpaid labour.
lots of things people choose to do even now, even on top of work, are unpaid labour. and are things that contribute to the happiness of both themselves and people around them.
caring for a sick loved one? unpaid labour. throwing your friend a surprise birthday party? unpaid labour. preparing breakfast in bed for your spouse? unpaid labour. parenting? TONS of unpaid labour!
people do things for the benefit of themselves and each other, regardless of money. the less people have to worry about paid labour, the more time and energy they have to invest in other endeavours, that improve the quality of life of those around them instead of just their ceo.
and idk about you but i think that's a good thing!
i rambled so long that twitter cut me off from adding more tweets, my point is, fuck capitalism, okay thanks for coming to my ted talk (and lmk if anyone has any advice for my situation while we are stuck in this system)! đź’•
