BMW 2010.
The BMW 1M.

The BMW 1M was a car that engineers built in their spare time. The final design “concept” was built in 2 weeks, the same 2 weeks Dr. Kay Segler, the then president of the M division was away on holiday.

Upon his return he was presented with the build, & since the development portion was essentially complete with no cost incurred the car could be built on the 128i/135i production line during off hours. The BMW 1M was green-lighted for production.

Because the 1M was built on a tight budget & time line, they was only one prototype built for assembly and testing.

With parts such as the Mirrors, entire rear suspension and differential borrowed from the M3, it began making the car more of an ///M car.

Valencia Orange at the time was a colour in the pipeline at BMW & like the borrowed M3 parts the car was presented in Valencia orange to Dr. Kay Segler. He loved it so much he insisted that it be the launch colour as we know it today.

From project approval in July ‘09 followed by engine developed in October ’09 to the car being released in December 2010, BMW & its engineers showed off its skills in using its existing platforms to bring the consumer something special & special it still is.
