Why we need to take exercise/moving for people with cancer WAY more seriously... and maybe not for the reason you think!

A thread... 1/lets see
I´ve lost count of the number of times that during a meeting with a patient that they tell me in passing that someone (either a dr or family member) has told them they cant do a certain type of exercise that they love. 2/?
Sometimes, they have quietly and without discussing it with anyone come to the conclusion that they have to give up a certain sport of activity they like because they are scared of something that can be easily solved. 3/
In my experience, the majority of these concerns are easily solved. Really easily. 4/
For one man, it was to walk in the forest. It was his favourite thing to do every day. His wife had told him he couldnt. There was no good reason for him to stop walking in that forest with care. Without talking to me about this he wouldnt have ever walked in the forest again.
When I told him it was ok he cried. We all cried if I am honest.
When we dont give these conversations about exercise and moving the time and importance they deserve, we do a huge disservice to the love and joy moving brings to the lives of the people we work with. 7/forgot to number the last few 🤪
We need to talk about exercise and moving with our patients. I get it can be scary if you dont feel comfortable in that space, but when we dont, scarier things happen. 8/ok I am done.
