i know no one cared about the links i’ve posted regarding whats happening in thailand so maybe if i tweet about it explaining everything as well as giving the context of thai politics, people will start paying attention so let’s go:
the latest coup in thailand happened in 2014, General Prayuth Chan-o-cha stepped up to become the prime minister. since then, thai people have been forced to live under the control of the military dictatorship. The junta government has exercised its power in order to silence us.
speaking the truth in thailand, is, and has always been risky. numerous people, who spoke the truth and demanded justice, using their rightful freedom of speech, have been brutally murdered or forced to disappear. and by numerous, i mean, 86 confirmed cases
in 2019, they actually held a general “election”, but it was all just a set up for General Prayuth to keep his prime minister chair and retain the citizens who questioned him. the said election was held on march 24, and it took them. 4 DAYS to unofficially announce the results.
and then the official results were announced on may 8. of course, Prayuth remains the prime minister.
well, after the general election’s results were announced, people started to question the government more. on june 4, a thai activist in exile, Wanchalearm Satsaksit, was abducted outside his apartment in cambodia.
Wanchalearm often exercised his right to freedrom of expression online in exile, which led the thai authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in 2018.
here’s a petition to sign to demand justice for Wanchalearm: https://www.change.org/p/unhcr-fight-for-human-right-and-justice-free-wanchalearm-satsaksit-%E0%B9%81%E0%B8%A5%E0%B8%B0%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A5%E0%B8%B5%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%A0%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%A2%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%A3%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%A1%E0%B8%B7%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%87%E0%B9%83%E0%B8%99%E0%B9%84%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%A2/signatures/confirm?cs_tk=AkL2nMm9SbjfJk3BOF8AAXicyyvNyQEABF8BvCr-rydVSO8wrfkrzk7gFdg%3D&token=60210680-9650-4f07-bb5a-f80c1c8d9c97&utm_campaign=fe31529d8d3d4b77a61cb523baad713e&utm_content=initial_v0_0_1&utm_medium=email&utm_source=guest_sign_login_link&utm_term=cs
so here’s the kicker: the current constitution which was drafted under the heavy influence of the military and enacted in 2017 allows authoritarianism and abuse of power to thrive even further at the price of thai people’s liberty and basic human rights.
the law and the corrupt justice system has been weaponized by the military to serve the ruling class and demolish the less fortunate. even if General Prayuth is no longer the prime minister, the military will forever be in control.
THEREFORE: we demand 3 things 1. the government must dissolve the parliament 2. the government must stop threatening the citizens’ freedom of speech and human rights 3. a new constitution must be drafted
so we’ve been protesting with said proposals for around a month now, but the biggest assembly yet was on august 10, at thammasat university.
at the protest, some issues regarding the monarchy were brought up on stage. we also demanded a monarch reform with a 10-part proposal. this made the king angry and last night, august 13 around 1 am this happened! (update: nothing has happened to both of them so far)
also, there’s a section in the constitution which is “section 112” = it is illegal to insult, defame, or threaten the king, queen, heir-apparent, heir-presumptive, or regent. a lot of people have been arrested or exiled from the country bc of this section.
on august 7, a human rights lawyer, Arnon Nampa, and an activist, Mike Panupong, were arrested according to the arrest warrant in the case derived from allegedly staging the gathering in july. this arrest warrant was issued without the summon warrant issued prior to the arrest.
they were later released but we have not heard from Arnon for a couple of days now so people are suspecting what has happened.
lastly (for now), i just wanted to say that after the protest on august 10, some cop/military bastards have threatened us with a massacre. they literally said that they wouldn’t want a history to repeat itself like in 1976 when they were the ones killing the students back then!
so please retweet this thread and spread the words about what’s happening in thailand. a lot of thai celebrities with big platforms are being completely silence. we really need people to pay attention to this! #SavePanusaya #SaveParit #FightwithPunusaya #ทนายอานนท์ไปไหน
also, this is a good source to read about other people who have been killed or disappeared bc they spoke the truth! http://www.maiiam.com/forthosewhodiedtrying/
update: Parit has just been issued with a warrant stated that he has violated section 112!
