I write IP and original fiction and creative non fiction so...I don't understand any narrative that says you're not a "real writer" is you do IP work. Perhaps this is the comics in me, but that's legitimately the stupidest possible take I can imagine on being a working writer https://twitter.com/romapancake/status/1293706666781872129
First of all, don't come for BIPOC for their success white people in publishing. That racism you let jump out has a high ass social price and I'm happy to make sure you pay it. You won't be famous for your book, but I'll do my best to make you famous. Ask about me.
Second of all, in the Jealous Janice moments some of y'all are clearly experiencing let's talk about how most big names have done IP work at some point. And how much you adored IP when it was the province of white women trying to build their careers. Because I got receipts
Everything from comics to Sweet Valley High to soap operas is IP work. And those checks pay the bills for the whole industry. The romance a month mills get slandered rightfully in some ways, but romance pays the bills for everybody so let's keep it cute when we talk about IP.
Let's be real, most people who get mad about IP work existing are mad that they can't sign on for that consistent check that lets writers do the original work. But while publishers take risks on debuts by unknowns, guess what makes that possible? IP. Because it always sells
I joke about how we never need another Batman or Spiderman movie. But I also know those properties just might save what's left of the comics industry. Because people adore icons as comfort reads. I know that comics like Wonder Woman opened the door for my work.
IP keeps the lights on at many a publishing house (and every other aspect of media) and the people who can slip into that world, create and then sashay over to something else are doing the heavy lifting of this industry. Put some respect on their names or catch these hands.
I know some of you are tiresome as hell and fancy yourselves the "real writers" because you would never sully your pretty artistic selves with the actual work of keeping the industry afloat. And we let you tell yourself that lie, but we all know you just don't have the range.
