How the system has failed the Nairobi doctor.
Good morning.
Nairobi City County has several health care facilities under its jurisdiction.
The 4 main facilities are Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, Pumwani Maternity Hospital, Mbagathi District Hospital and Mutuini(Dagoretti South) SDH.
Nairobi Metropolitan Services came into existence on March 18th 2020 when the deed of transfer of functions signed between Governor Mike Sonko and the State came into effect.
Essentially the health function was transferred to the National Government.
Nairobi County Government under @MikeSonko was to hand over all human resources instruments to NMS by 1st of July 2020.
This has not yet happened. They are dillydallying with it.
They have created all hurdles for this to happen.
As such, @MikeSonko still controls the payroll. His officers have intentionally delayed payment of salaries to Health Care Workers to make NMS look bad. June salaries were paid on July 20th.We are still waiting for July salaries. How we treat our doctors.
In this COVID-19 pandemic, doctors working in the county haven't had a medical cover since July 1st 2020.
Meaning, doctors have to pay for the service they offer. We have several doctors who have been admitted. We have to contribute money to help our colleagues.
If thats not enough, we have 5 medical specialists who have worked at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital without pay for 26 months. Efforts to get them put on payroll have been futile. (This is a long painful story for another day)
Then we have doctors employed by the county of shortterm contracts as front line workers due to the HR shortages.
They haven't been paid their salaries for 6 months. Most have since quit.
The quality of PPEs delivered to our hospitals is wanting. HCWs have been forced to improvise PPEs.
Due to this we have several HCWs who have contracted COVID-19.

Who cursed us as a nation ?
The entire Nairobi County Government has only 16 (sixteen) isolation beds to serve a population of atleast 4Million.
They are riding on the National Government isolation facilities at @KNH_hospital and @kutrrh and private facilities.
This is unacceptable.
We don't have an isolation facility dedicated for HCWs in the county. We are relying on the one set at KNH. We need our own.
So if you contract COVID-19, you are on your own. The Pumwani story is evidence enough.
Finally, our efforts to get these issues resolved have fallen on deaf ears.

We have suffered enough.
The system has failed us.

We are about to fail them too.
