Prosecutors are a huge part of our current system, so you could either have a white man in that role, or a woman of color, but either way that person will have to do their job and follow the law. Kamala did that, but she also made sweeping reforms. Here's a list of some:
As Deputy DA, she co-founded the Coalition to End the Exploitation of Kids
As DA of San Francisco, she created the Back on Track program to help drug offenders re-enter society.
As DA of San Francisco, she refused to seek the Death Penalty even when pressured from members of THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY including Senator Dianne Feinstein (who, like most dems, has evolved with the party, and who I still admire)
As AG, she created the Bureau of Children's Justice
As AG, she sponsored AB1644 which would have established a 4 year pilot program to provide elementary schools with mental health services
These are just a few of the over 50 reforms she has created. Most of them curated by @BlackWomanViews who is incredible
The police system needs to be reimagined. But for the past twenty years, @KamalaHarris has been doing the hard work from the inside. It's not as glamorous as legislating in D.C., but look at everything she accomplished.
Did she make mistakes? Yes, everyone does. Was she "not a progressive prosecutor" NO!!! She was progressive AF. She was creating Back on Track when Obama, yes our beloved Obama, was advocating the tough on crime stance.
We have all progressed rapidly. But holding our elected leaders to a higher moral standard than us is detrimental. They evolve just like the rest of us. And some have always been super liberal like Bernie Sanders. But Bernie is also a white man and is privileged.
All the people who are saying "abolish the police" were you advocating for that ten years ago in public? Things have changed and thank god democratic politicians have changed too. But we can't expect them to be better than us. They are us.
And I want to know, what do you gain by saying that Kamala is a cop? You're certainly not reforming the criminal justice system by saying that. And you're not looking into the nuances of her career. You're attacking the most accomplished black woman in politics.
A black woman who reformed SO MUCH in the criminal justice system in California while, yes, also doing her job as the top prosecutor. We all WISH we could get as much done in our life as she has done in the past two decades.
I can't stand seeing liberal white women who I went to college with post that they're disappointed in the choice of Kamala as VP. You're disappointed because you're giving into the narrative instead of researching what she's done. Which is hard to find, by the way.
When you Google "Kamala Harris AG Record" the first page is all articles that smear and don't accurately report the nuances. Critiquing is good. We all need to progress. But those articles for the most part are critiquing policies they don't fully understand.
So I had to look up "Kamala Harris AG Accomplishments" to find the progressive reforms she instituted, which are also a part of her record and should come up with the first search.
Seriously, though, we expect black women to vote democrat and do all the hard work (see: black women are at the heart of every major political progressive movement) and then when they're in positions of power and do their job, their accomplishments are minimized
@KamalaHarris is now the most accomplished black woman in politics. When you say you are disappointed because of her record, make sure you actually know what her record is. Do the research. Look into the nuances. Don't just read hit pieces and call it done.
And certainly don't be surprised if I DM you and tell you more about said nuances! If you didn't know about them before, that's okay. Like Kamala, you too can progress. I won't cancel you.
I'm also writing this thread from South Dakota where no one is masked so I am especially AMPED WITH RAGE
And for those of you who may not have been for Kamala in the primary but are still genuinely excited that the first Black Woman and Asian American Woman was picked for VP, welcome to the mf'ing #KHive
