THREAD - The Job of Business

Businesses have one job...to make their owner and investors money. They are not charities.

When you go to work for or with a business you make an agreement. This much money for this kind of work for these many hours. It's an agreement.
When hiring you the business does not become your mommy.

I'm a business owner. I work very hard to take care of my people. Partially it's because I'm not an awful person (contrary to many reports) but it's also because I need good people.
As I write this thread I'm in my office. It's almost 6pm. My guys have been off for 2 hours. I started my day at 5 this morning, 2.5 hours before my guys. That's my job. To find new work and manage the work I have.

I don't want a medal. I signed up for this. It's my job.
But many people seem to think the job of a business is to take care of it's employees.

IT ISN'T!

We have an agreement...you work, I pay. Simple as that. If you don't feel you're properly compensated for your time move on. Get another job. That's your right. You're not a slave.
Any good business takes care of the people worth taking care of.

I promote from within. Two of my foreman started with me as carpenters. My superintendent started with my dad as a carpenter and was my boss for years. Now he's my number 2.
It's not always easy.

For example: A long time employee of mine, a carpenter and foreman, just quit. He has family issues and needs to move. After working for me for 4 years he just up and quits.

I'm fucked. We have work starting literally tomorrow that he was going to run.
Now I have to shut down another job, move that crew to this one and try to knock it out as quickly as possible and then get them back to the job they left.

I got screwed by a long time employee, someone I busted my ass to keep busy for years. But no one gives a damn.
It's part of running a business.

It's part of why I'm in the office at 6 pm Wednesday night. I spent too much of my day trying to get ready for the new job tomorrow. Stuff my foreman should have done if he hadn't quit.
But it's what I do because my job, the job of my company, is to make money. And if my company makes money my employees make money. That's how it works. If I can't keep them busy they'll move one. If I can't keep them busy I'll go out of business.
The job of a business is to make money, not to take care of people. But a good business takes care of it's people because without it's people it can't make money.

See how that works?
