Alexand Lukashenko, the president of Belarus was first elected in 1994 and has ruled the country ever since. he was just re-elected which has led to massive protest in the country.

there is growing frustration with Lukashenko’s leadership. he is sometimes referred to as “Europe’s last dictator”. more than 2000 people have been detained during the election, according to HRCV.
as exit polls reported Lukashenko had won 80% of the vote, the streets erupted.

police used stun grenades, rubber bullets and water cannons on protests. one protester was reportedly KILLED. 120 arrested.
this is Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. she is the main challenger to Lukashenko and has refused to accept the result of the exit polls. she was held hostage and forced to read out a speech how she doesn’t want people to protest. this is the video.
