Hi #SharkWeek! My name is Melissa and I'm a shark scientist watching "Monsters Under The Bridge." Excited to add commentary, talk #shark facts, and fact-check! Hola!
Excited to see @DrGuttridge & @DrNeilHammer in this #SharkWeek show based out of the 7-mile bridge in #Florida. I know a lot of the people behind-the-scenes on this show too, so I am stoked!
#SharkWeek A #womeninSTEM sighting! Did anyone get her full name (I was writing up another tweet about the 7-mile bridge.
#SharkWeek For those that don't know, the Seven Mile Bridge is a bridge in the #FloridaKeys, in Monroe County, #Florida, United States.
Is there a "Keys" hammerhead #shark? #SharkWeek, we're about to find out! Fun fact: the "hammer" shape of their head is called a cephalofoil.
Laura McDonnel, @DrGuttridge, & @DrNeilHammer are splitting up to "divide and conquer" in this #SharkWeek episode.
Hey #SharkWeek, we just saw a nurse #shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum)! They are an elasmobranch in the family Ginglymostomatidae. Nurse sharks are a gray-brown color and have a long tail that can be up to one-fourth their total length!
Hi #SharkWeek, did you know nurse #sharks are found in the warm, shallow waters of the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific oceans. Have you ever gone diving with one? Snorkeling? This was the FIRST EVER shark I saw in the wild!
#SharkWeek The nurse #shark is one of the most commonly observed #sharks on coral and rocky reefs in their range. They reach fairly large sizes (10 feet/3 m)!
#SharkWeek Nurse #sharks spend most of the day resting in caves or under ledges, sometimes in groups! During the twilight hours and at night, they become active hunters and prey on fishes, rays, and invertebrates. They are suction feeders.
Back to hammerhead #sharks, #SharkWeek. The persistence of the that cephalofoil shape over the past 20-25 million years and its presence in all of the hammerhead #shark species shows there is evolutionary success in this shape!
#SharkWeek The great hammerhead #shark is the largest of the identified species of this shark. It can grow up to 20 feet in length and weigh up to 1,000 pounds!!
#SharkWeek You may have heard of the narrator say "ampullae of Lorenzini." These are jelly-filled pores which allows #sharks to detect, among other things, the electrical fields created by prey animals.
#SharkWeek The hammerhead's increased ampullae coverage allows it to find its favorite meal- stingrays! Even when buried under the sand.
Laura McDonnell ( @LauraHopeM) and @DrNeilHammer have deployed a #BRUV! Hey @SharkWeek, if you want to know more about these, I mentioned them in my #SharkWeek threads yesterday.
#SharkWeek A bull #shark (Carcharhinus leucas) has been spotted! Bull #sharks live throughout the world in shallow, warm ocean waters. They're even known to swim into freshwater rivers.
#SharkWeek Reaching lengths of 11 feet (3.5 m) and weights up to nearly 700lbs (315 kg), they are one of the largest requiem sharks (Family Carcharhinide)! I talk about them in a big @sharkweek thread earlier.
Hey #SharkWeek! Did you know hammerhead #sharks are especially vulnerable to capture stress? According to MOTE, this is particularly true during hot summers #Florida is known for, since there is less oxygen in the water.
#SharkWeek Please reduce fight times when hooking hammerhead #sharks, and always use non-stainless circle hooks to avoid gut-hooking and promote quick corrosion of the hook if left in the #shark.
