As a paleontologist (who grew up in South Dakota during the 1990s), is it OK to have mixed feelings about the anniversary of the T. rex Sue's discovery? I sometimes think most everything about it might have been all the worst things to happen to our field in the last 50 years.
I think you could make a strong case that it had major negative effects on every sector of paleontology that it touched (academia, government affairs, commercial paleo, amateur paleo, the museum world, field collecting, etc.).
I of course exaggerate a little, but I don't know that there has ever been an honest reckoning of how deeply it changed things, in so many ways.
